part. >> reporter: tim cook welcoming hundreds of apple faithful who lined up around the block. >> good to see you. >> reporter: some since 3:00 tuesday afternoon. >> wonderful. it's unbelievable. >> reporter: to get their hands on these, the iphone 6 and 6 plus. apple's next gen smartphones that are much bigger than the iphone 5 and arguably better. abdul waited in line 48 hours for this moment. >> i wanted to be one of the first people to have it. i could have waited and got it in a couple months, but it's not worth it. >> reporter: patrick from norway couldn't wait that long. no, really. last night he paid someone $300 to get their fourth spot in line so he could get his hands on two iphone 6s, which left him at a loss for words. >> it's amazing. wow. i -- >> reporter: patrick dropped close to a couple thousand dollars this morning. abdul, a little more h

unexpectedly. >> we got two tickets for parking on the street. we got to sleep in the car and everything. >> how much you have to pay on the tickets? >> about $41 each. >> how much for the phones? >> $2064. >> how much in las vegas? >> none. i have my own business. >> it's a hobby. it's a passion. we all got something we're excited about. technology is one of those things. >> all right. a lot of excitement out there. well, what do you do once you get your hands on one? this is every iphone owner's nightmare. first person that bought the iphone in perth, australia, he dropped it. the poor guy waited in line overnight to be the first to buy apple's newest device there. as he was opening that box to show a reporter, the phone just, wham, fell out of the box. fortunately for him, the device isn't have any damage. that's good for apple, i suppose. well, local leaders are demanding california's top law enforcement officer to investigate what they believe to be an unethical relationship

between pg&e and the california public utility's commission. this stems from some e-mails that were exposed. they show questionable conversations between the two groups related to the investigation of the 2010 deadly gas pipelineñr explosion in san bruno. nbc bay area's stephanie trong joins us live this morning. any indication the attorney general is going to look into this? >> reporter: that's the really big question. good morning to you, laura. state senator jerry hill being very clear that he feels he wants to uncover the extent of corruption in the cpuc. this is the letter that was signed today and delivered to harris' office. but this came up with some allegations after the pg&e e-mails came up this week stating that the cpc tried to help arrange specific judges presiding over the case to get a ruling in favor of pg&e. so signing and delivering the letter. pg&e firing three top people this week, people who worked day

in and day out with the cpuc. this after a public records request by san bruno showed some questionable e-mails with pg&e acknowledging that it found improper ex parte communications with cpuc officials. today's letter from hill and mullen also points to the executive director and former generalhíg÷ council, allegedly reassigning its own attorneys. now, senator hill mincing no words in what he hopes the attorney general will do now. >> it's not just what happened to pg&e. that has been the spotlight for the last four years. there's $50 billion of rate payer money annually that filters through the puc to the utilities in california, whether it's telecommunications or the other gas/lelectricgas/electric. we've just seen what's happened with pg&e. my thought is this is probably what happens with every utility. that's what needs to be investigated. >> reporter: senator hill adding he feels it's cpuc president's

burning in california. 12,000 homes are still at risk of burning down at the king fire continues to grow. in fact, the state estimates it's now spending $5 million a day to fight the flames. more than 76,000 acres have burned and thousands of residents in the area have been evacuated. investigators believe the fire was intentionally set. today the man accused of starting that fire will make his first court appearance. officers arrested wayne huntsman wednesday. he has a criminal history that includes everything from assault with a deadly weapon to drug charges. huntsman has previously lived in santa cruz. yesterday, his sister, who didn't want her face shown on camera, told us she doesn't believe he set the fire. >> i'm devastated, in shock. i can't believe that he would ever have anything to do with something like that or that he would do anything intentionally like that or be part of it. to me, he would be on the other end, trying to help people and put it out and do what he could to be of assistance. >> all eastbound lanes of

highway 50 reopened this morning after being shut down for more than a day. the westbound side is down to one lane. the fire is only 10% contained. we have new details raising new questions about 49ers player ray mcdonald and his fiance. in august, mcdonald was arrested at his home on charges of domestic violence. now the san jose police department has released a report about an incident at the home back in may where someone called 911 and reported a woman at the home was holding a gun during an argument. it's believed the two people involved in that case were mcdonald and his fiance. investigators say the woman set the gun down and left the home after the man threatened to call 911. no charges were filed in that case. legal analyst steven clark says this old report could, however, shed new light on the new case. >> if mr. mcdonald can show that on a past occasion he was the one that felt threatened because his fiance picked up a gun, that could explain his conduct in

august if he grabbed her. it gives credibility to a potential self-defense case. >> mcdonald has not commented on the may incident. the defensive lineman has not yet been formally charged by the d.a. and continues to play for the 49ers. team officials say they will let due process run its course before making any decision on his future in the league. now, it is important to note that we have repeatedly asked san jose police for the report filed regarding the august domestic violence incident that led to mcdonald's arrest. the department has said it will not release the report. hundreds, if not thousands, of baltimore ravens fans lined up this morning to trade in their ray rice jerseys. earlier this week, the team said it would give fans a brand new jersey from the player of their choice if they wanted to return an official nfl ray rice jersey. some people were there as early as 4:00 a.m. the line you see here stretched all the way around the stadium. the ravens released rice after video surfaced of him knocking his fiance unconscious.

the commissioner of the nfl is expected to address the string of domestic violence issues at a news conference in about an hour. it'll be the first time roger goodell has given a public statement on the disturbing trend. the conference is set for noon at the new york hilton midtown. you can watch it live right here on nbc bay area. a san francisco man is behind bars after beating someone to death with workout equipment at a local gym. kenneth osaka was working out when he and another man got into a heated confrontation. police say osaka picked up a solid steel bar used to lift weights and hit the other man in the head with it several times. the victim was rushed to san francisco general hospital where he died last night. >> that's kind of unnerving. i didn't know anything about it. this is the first i've heard. but i mean, i'll continue to

come to the gym. i'm sorry to hear what happened to that man. i feel bad for the family. >> the victim's name is not yet being released. osaka is expected to be in court next week. a viewer in san francisco is hoping you can help identify the man in this video. it shows a man scoping out a neighborhood in the richmond district, walking up to his home, and taking a package off the porch. the viewer tells us it happened sunday afternoon. the viewer has filed a police report, but the suspect has yet to be identified. if you know this man, call san francisco police. a few san jose city employees have apparently been buying expensive tablets, renting a bmw, and picking up hundreds of dollars in fine wines. but there's an issue with it. they did it with your money. san jose city auditor has released a report showing potential abuses of city-issued credit cards by some city employees. one department purchased several high-end tablets without getting i.t. approval. in another case, an employee who totalled his car used his city credit card to rent a new bmw

for more than two weeks. another card holder treated city staff to an expensive dinner at a downtown restaurant, spending more than $700 on wine alone. the auditor did say most employees followed the city's spending procedures but recommended the city tighten its oversight on credit cards. terror in the skies. passengers aboard this jetblue plane brace for the worst. we're going to show you the chaos that ensued. and why would any school need this? the mea culpa from southern california school administrators after going too far to prepare for emergencies. and i'm meteorologist christina loren live in san francisco for the american heart association's 5k heart walk. the race starts at noon, but right after this quick break, we're going to talk about some heart healthy tips for you and your family. plus, lots of vitamin d on tap for the weekend. your forecast when nbc bay area comes right back.

some extremely frightening moments for passengers and crew on board a jetblue flight. it was heading to austin, texas, from southern california yesterday when the cabin suddenly began filling up with smoke. one of the engines had apparently exploded. nbc's tom costello reports. >> reporter: it doesn't get much scarier than this. smoke filling an aircraft and terrified passengers grabbing for oxygen masks. jared west took this selfie video of himself while on oxygen. jetblue flight 1416 had just taken off from long beach, california, headed to austin when suddenly passengers reported hearing an explosion. the number two engine on the right side was on fire. soon smoke began bleeding into the aircraft. the pilot quickly interrupted radio traffic to tell controllers he was making an emergency landing. >> this is runway three zero. >> jetblue 1416. >> in flight crew be prepared for landing. >> reporter: with smoke filling

the cabin and babies screaming, many passengers feared the worst. >> you can't see the person next to you and you're inhaling smoke. and the oxygen masks are not deploying. you know, we all thought there was a major problem. >> reporter: but moments later, a smooth landing. >> jetblue 1416 is on the ground. >> reporter: once on the ground with fire crews standing by, passengers used the emergency evacuation chutes and jumped to safety. twilight actor jackson rath bone posted these photos on our right engine exploded and our cabin filled with smoke. the oxygen masks did not deploy, but the brave stewardesses came around and manually deployed them. >> i cried for ten minutes because i wanted to talk to my kids. >> i'm not going back on a plane to go back. i just can't. >> boy. that's pretty frightening. that was tom costello reporting. three people suffered minor injuries. one person was taken to the hospital for shortness of breath. a school district in san diego now says it will return an armored military vehicle after

public outcry. the district says it bought the vehicle to use in the event of a campus shooting or other emergency. school officials even considered painting a red cross on the vehicle to make it look less menacing. but people in the community and even some school officials say the armored truck made them feel uncomfortable. local veterans will voice their concerns can today in a meeting with health care officials. the palo alto va health care system will be holding a veterans town hall this afternoon. the goal is to learn more about the challenges local veterans face at local va facilities. earlier this year at arizona va hospital was accused of delaying care for veterans, in some cases the delays stretched more than a year. today's meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the va palo alto health care system headquarters just off foothill expressway. time to lace up those sneakers, get out your wallets as well. time to help save lives. we're about 45 minutes away from the american heart association heart walk in san francisco.

and that's where meteorologist christina loren joins us live. we're going to see plenty of feet hitting the pavement today. it's a good day for it. >> reporter: it really is. it's a fantastic day. we know temperatures out here are going to be comfortable later today. speaking of which, we're going to get to your forecast in a moment. but i have never, ever -- it never ceases to amaze me some of the amazing guests we get here on nbc bay area. i'm joined by one right now. this is actually the ceo of stubhub. this is chris. you know -- hi there. how you doing? >> i'm fine, thanks. how are you? >> reporter: i'm all right. this is a really important event for everybody because we want to raise awareness, but it has a special meaning for you. can you tell me about your experience with heart disease? >> yeah, absolutely. five years ago i had open-heart surgery to correct a leaky valve, and 15 months after that i ran my first marathon. >> reporter: wow. so this could happen to anyone. >> absolutely. heart disease is the number one killer of americans, but it's

also really prevalent throughout our population. >> reporter: it really is. we were talking about it during the break, how it's the number one killer. all cancers combined don't even measure up to the damage that heart disease does. it's one of those things we have a lot of information about this day and age. >> that's right. the heart association takes the money we raise -- we're going to raise over $3 million through this heart walk today -- and they use that primarily for research in education. so finding out more about how we can prevent and treat heart disease and telling people what they can do to deal with heart disease. >> reporter: wow. that's fantastic. again, the ceo of stubhub. i got to thank you. you've helped me score some choice giants tickets. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: i'm going to keep looking on stubhub for more. those tickets sell fast. thank you very much. looking forward to the race. we're going to talk to more people out here in san francisco. you never know who's going to show up at a big event like this. a lot of people coming out to show support for something that's so important. now, temperatures are definitely those that will promote outdoor

t-mobile will start next week. it is good news for thousands of muni riders. ed lee signed a contract for 175 new light rail vehicles today. the contract was approved by the board of supervisors last week to help muni expand and reduce maintenance problems on current light rail cars. the trains will cost the city $648 million. it might be a little more difficult to find a place to park today. today is national parking day. that means several metered parking spots will be transformed into small public spaces and parks for a few hours. the goal of the event is to remind cities to include green space in their plans. the nationwide event will be celebrated locally in san francisco, san jose, and morgan hill. time to grab the kids or your significant other and get ready for laugh out loud this weekend. nbc's mike inouye joins us now with a look at all the fun and cool events that start tonight. >> good morning. there's lots of events this

france conducted its first air strike in iraq, destroying a logistics depot used by isis. it's the first of many operations according to the french president today. more than 30 people were killed after a series of bomb and mortar shell attacks in and around baghdad. a suicide bomber rammed his car into a security check point yesterday. then minutes later, mortar shells hit houses and a bus station. no media claim of responsibility, but car bombs and attacks against shiite civilians are common tactics used by isis militants. in the meantime, new video from isis shows a captive british journalist who urges the west to give up its war against

isis. nbc's jim maceda reports from london. >> hello -- >> reporter: the latest isis videoof yet another hostage. this has disturbed people given to what's happened to previous british and u.s. hostages paraded on video by isis. still, this video is very different in that isis this time isn't seen to physically abuse or threaten. and it has a bizarre, almost pedantic message for the west. but british government officials and security officials are taking it very seriously. some officials, in fact, here are saying the video is a sign that isis is becoming desperate now to drum up support as the west is ratcheting up its anti-isis military campaign. now, that australian plot, the thwarted isis plot to behead victims at random in the streets of sydney, that's also getting a lot of play here in britain. australia, like great britain, is a key u.s. ally in the war on

isis. it's grappling with what could be isis' first foray into homegrown terrorism. up until now, isis focused its attacks in iraq and syria. of course, britain has its own history of homegrown terror. so it is a scary reminder that it's no longer just al qaeda but now isis who could soon become a threat for britains, even here at home. i'm jim maceda, nbc news, reporting in london. now back to you. heavy rains due to a tropical storm and a seasonal monsoon have caused widespread flooding in the philippines. local officials reported that hundreds were evacuated today. some were stuck in waters more than neck deep. mexico now dealing with its second hurricane of the week. at least one person died when hurricane polo hit acapulco last

night. the storm brought heavy wind and rain to mexico's already battered pacific coast. the storm is now heading towards los cabos, where officials are still dealing with the aftermath of hurricane odile. more american tourists are being evacuated from cabo. take a look at this long line. they were lined up at the international airport yesterday to try to board flights out of baja. large areas of the resort region are still without electricity or water. >> we've been standing in line for about 5 1/2 hours. military police have been good about getting us water, but we're frustrated. we're tired, we're dirty. we were in one of those hotels where the windows were blown out. a little traumatized because we've never been in a hurricane. other than that, we're trying to keep our spirits up. >> they just want to go home. so far, some 18,000 of the 30,000 tourists have been evacuated. the votes are in. scotland has rejected becoming aen independent country and will remain part of the united king

dod kingdom. >> reporter: they were all up night, both sides believing they would win. >> too close to call. >> reporter: by the early morning, it was over. a surprise ten-point victory for those who didn't want independence. >> in response to the referendum question, should scotland be an independent country, went in favor of no. >> reporter: united kingdom would remain united. >> the people of scotland have spoken, and it is a clear result. they've kept our country of four nations together. and like millions of other people, i am delighted. >> reporter: for two years, it was a nation divided. people with different ideas of what they wanted. an independent scotland with more control over government or the stat us can quo. the queen urged scotland to think carefully about their future. politicians in london offered more autonomy in a last-ditch effort to keep the united

kingdom together. now they'll have to deliver. >> parties made vows late in the campaign to devolve more powers to scotland. scotland will expect these to be honored in rapid force. >> reporter: many voters said this country would never be the same after this vote, and not just scotland, all four countries in the united kingdom have been promised more auton y autonomy. nbc news, edinburgh. and the first minister resigning today. he said, quote, for me as a leader, my time is nearly over. but for scotland, the campaign continues and the dream will never die. a huge fire broke out at this warehouse in philadelphia this morning. fire quickly spreading to several neighboring buildings. more than 100 firefighters rushed in to battle that blaze. one person was seriously

injured. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. with a cop killer still on the loose, pike county, pennsylvania, remains on high alert. there's a man responsible for shooting two state troopers, killing one of them. nbc's stephanie gosk reports. >> reporter: state police blocked roads around pennsylvania thursday evening, at one point focusing on the area surrounding the home where suspect eric freen lived with his parents. some residents too scared to go outside. >> doors locked. >> reporter: others unable to go home. >> yeah, i'd like to go home. i have dogs in the house. >> reporter: while authorities struggle to find the alleged killer, investigators are looking closely at his past, focusing on an interest in the military. in 2007, he was an extra in a short film about nazi german camps. more recently, he joined a group called the eastern wolves. it staged regular war re-enactments like this one posted on youtube.

ben long was a member too. >> the group of people was a group of educated hobbyists and outdoorsmen who liked to get out and have some fun. >> reporter: the last time long saw freen was six months ago. he says he and his friends were stunned by the news. >> just didn't make sense. it really just doesn't make sense. >> reporter: on thursday, freen was added to the if fbi's ten most wanted list. just as a community was paying their respects to one of frein's victims. at the funeral for corporal brian dixon, family friends and state troopers from around the country tried to make sense of the deadly shooting. >> god speed, hammer. we love you and we miss you. >> reporter: just outside the church, snipers on rooftops reminded everyone that the search for his killer is not over. >> and that was stephanie gosk reporting. three idaho teenagers are lucky to be alive after a

childish prank led to a major car accident. deputies say this vehicle crashed early sunday when a passenger used a lighter to set the driver's armpit hair on fire. none of the teens were wearing seat belts. all three were injured in the crash. the driver was also cited for inattentive driver and was likely speeding before the crash. the passenger who had the lighter was also ticketed. it is a serious virus sickening children across the nation and now it's reached california. what parents need to know. and the way angelina jolie has helped women battle cancer before it strikes. and we are raising awareness about heart disease out here in san francisco. getting ready for the heart walk. are you guys excited? oh, yeah. i'm feeling that. let's see if the parents are excited. y'all excited? >> woo! >> reporter: all right. that's what i'm talking about. we're live out here. we want to give you some very beneficial tips on heart health.

welcome back, everyone. a rare virus that has sickened dozens of children across the country is now in california. state health leaders say it is especially dangerous for children with asthma. nbc bay area michelle roberts spoke to a pediatrician about entero virus 68.

>> reporter: max roburg has been -- >> cough into your arm. >> reporter: his dad says he'll continue to remind him of that after hearing about a rare respiratory illness called enterovirus 68, which is spreading throughout california. >> he actually had rsv as an infant. >> reporter: doctors say enterovirus is especially dangerous for kids with asthma. >> they can't take a deep breath. much worse than their normal asthma attacks. they just can't get a breath in. they're having trouble talking. they need to be seen immediately in the emergency room. >> reporter: dr. christine sayings enterovirus may look like a normal cold, coughing, sneezing, and can quickly escalate into a serious and contagious respiratory issue. >> that's what they saw in colorado, was as soon as school started, they saw the spread and they started seeing their admissions increase. >> reporter: 150 people in 18 states have tested positive in the last couple of months. the cdc confirms four more cases

in california. three kids in san diego and one in ventura. >> it's very important for parents that have asthmatic children that they have full control of the asthma by having kids take medications properly. >> reporter: not every child who is exposed will show symptoms, but parents with kids that have pre-existing conditions should pay close attention. >> how many times do we tell our kids that? well, recent studies have shown actress angelina jolie has had a big impact on women after revealing she had undergone a preventive double mastectomy. now new research finds the angelina effect has lasted long after her announcement was made. data from 21 genetic centers across the u.k. shows referrals for genetic counseling and testing more than doubled in the two months immediately after announcement last year.

so he was -- the moment he was born, because they knew, they were able to pounce right on him and give him everything he needed. since then, he's had one more procedure. he's definitely thriving, but definitely at some point in his future he'll need his pulmonary valve replaced, which is why we're here. the american heart association, they're funding medical advancements that really saved his life. that's why he's here today. and when i think about where those advancements will be ten years from now, i mean, he is going to live to be 100 and will be a basketball player i'm sure. >> reporter: and he's absolutely beautiful. he's a little bit shy but he's smart as a whip. he's just gorgeous. and thank you so much for sharing your story. >> thank you for sharing this story. >> reporter: oh, of course. you know what? we're out here today. the goal is to raise $3 million. so far i think we're going to do it. what do you guys think? >> yeah! >> reporter: they come alive.

i'm going to show you the futurecast in a moment for that. but let's start with the next five days. your microclimate forecast for san jose and san francisco showing you not a great deal of temperature separation. as we get into this weekend, that climb only about 2 to 3 degrees each day. by next week, as our first system of low pressure starts to move closer to the coast, our temperatures will drop. now, the one we're really counting on to bring us our next round of rain arrives as we head through wednesday into thursday. but overall, we're watching these long-range forecast models. they appear to be lining up the systems one by one out there in the pacific as we head throughout the month of october. so it's something that we're very interested in. nbc bay area weather center, we're going to keep you updated. i know with the drought, you're interested as well. now, we're getting ready to kick off this race. it starts at noon. one more time, i want to say thank you to holden, amy, and your family for coming out here. you guys ready for the race? >> oh, we're ready. >> reporter: all right. thank you to sephora and all the

has our bay area proud series. >> bill shepherd of san jose says it was only just a few years ago that he first tried scuba diving. bill says he loved it so much, he's given up all his other hobbies to pursue this one. he loves the world he has discovered under water, and as you'll see in our bay area proud, will go to great lengths to protect it. to the people of pacific grove, so used to so many beautiful sights, it had to be one of the stranger ones they've seen in quite some time. as strange to see bill shepherd, says, as it was to be a part of. >> i look ridiculous. it's so uncomfortable. i'm dying of heat. you'll edit it out, but there was some serious chafing going on. >> reporter: the day was august 24th, a sunday. bill, along with his son aaron,

and about a dozen other members of the scuba squad dive club based in scotts valley, were spending the day diving the waters of monterey bay off of lover's point. it was after his last dive of the day, though, that bill got a signal something was up. >> as bill came in, i pointed it out. like, what is that? why are there dead fish attached to a buoy? >> reporter: it was club member teaguen's job that day to stay onshore and watch after her fellow divers, which is why she was the one who noticed the two men, a couple of spear guns, and a hole bunch of fish they shouldn't have been catching. >> i kind of motioned to them, hey, you know this is a protected area? you aren't allowed to hunt here. >> there's big signs up everywhere that say that. it's not like you can miss. >> then they started walking towards their car. we'll see if we can get a picture of their license plate. they continued walking up 16th avenue. >> reporter: here is when things went from the responsible to the

slightly ridiculous. for the next half hour, the two poachers led bill, all still in their wet suits, on a mile and a half slow-speed walking pursuit through the streets of pacific grove. >> it would have given you pause to go, what? >> reporter: the poachers even split up at one point, trying to shake bill, but no luck. they eventually had to return to their truck, where a department of fishing game warden was there to greet them. >> it was neat to see the team work together the way they did. honest, i'm kind of proud of it. >> reporter: proud for doing their part in keeping pacific grove as beautiful below the water as it is above. the warden thanked bill and the other members of the club for their help and let them know that the poachers face a $500 fine per fish for what they did. totaling about $5,000. garvin thomas, nbc bay area
